Building a more inspiring Pinterest with inclusive AI

Our mission to give everyone the inspiration to create a life they love depends on our users’ ability to visualize that life on Pinterest. We believe AI should be additive, and we invest in innovations that make Pinterest a more inclusive place for everyone.

Launched in 2023, our body type technology uses shape, size and form to identify various body types in over 3.5 billion images on the platform.

“Pinterest is a visual discovery platform and we want users to be able to see themselves reflected in their search results. That’s why we are leveraging AI to bring greater inclusion to our product design."

How we make Pinterest safer for teens

Private profiles are not discoverable on search and are the only option for teens under the age of 16.

Parents and caregivers can set a passcode to lock certain settings related to account management, privacy and data and social permissions.

Users under 16 can only share their Pins and Boards, as well as send and receive messages, from mutual followers accepted through a unique profile sharing link sent outside of Pinterest.

Pinterest doesn’t allow fake beauty filters on Pins. Tools like AR Try-on allow users to play with eye makeup and lipstick colors—without distorting their faces.

Regardless of age, all new Pinterest users must input their birth date to create an account. Accounts belonging to users under 18 must go through an age verification process to change their birth date.

Investing in a more inspired internet

Pinterest was the founding signatory for the Inspired Internet Pledge, which aims to unite companies through a common goal: making the internet a safer and healthier place for everyone, especially young people.

In 2023, Pinterest partnered with the UC Berkeley Greater Good Science Center to conduct research on the relationship between inspiration and wellbeing. The study found that spending just ten minutes on Pinterest buffers against rising burnout, stress and social disconnectedness among Gen Z college students in the United States.

Pinterest developed our own social media wellbeing score which assessed four key pillars: safety, belonging, self-worth and purpose. Results showed that Pinterest leads the industry in user wellbeing.
